Ways to Infuse Your Big Day with Your Personal Style

July 25, 2025

He’s popped the question, and you’ve said yes. Now it’s time to start the wedding planning! You get to select your dress, your venue, the type of wedding ceremony, your reception location, and your wedding decor. With all the decisions to be made, it can be easy to become overwhelmed. However, if you keep sight of your goals and infuse your preparations with your own sense of style, you’ll be sure to create the wedding day of your dreams!

Below are a few tips to keep you centered as you plan your wedding with your own unique signature style and story.

1. Define your vision

With countless wedding themes and ideas, narrowing down your vision can be challenging. But, it’s a necessary first step toward designing your perfect wedding. Are you looking for a sunset wedding in a beautiful garden? What about a ceremony in a chapel followed by a quaint reception? Focusing on exactly what you’re looking for will help you decide on the rest of the details.

Sometimes, keeping a scrapbook of favorite wedding ideas can help you figure out what you’re looking for. Paste pictures of venues, ceremony ideas, dresses, and decor in a book that you can carry with you. That way when inspiration strikes, you have someplace to record it!

2. Determine the time of year

Have you always dreamed of a cozy winter wedding? Or wanted your big day to be an outdoor spring affair? Determining the time of year is the next important step in creating a wedding to follow your own personal story. Each season has its highlights and drawbacks, and determining which you prefer will help you decide on the rest of your wedding journey.

Sometimes knowing what you want out of your wedding will help you figure out what time of year will be best. If you want an outdoor ceremony or reception, then sometime during the warmer months would be better. If you want an indoor affair, fall and winter can be considered as well.

3. Pick your Colors

Your colors go a long way in telling your story, so choosing the ones that most reflect your personal style is essential. Your colors don’t have to match the season in which you’re getting married, though you can find inspiration in nature.

When choosing your colors, be sure to consider a few additional factors such as:

  • Bridesmaid dresses - Are dresses readily available in the colors you’re choosing? Is there an extra cost?
  • Flowers - Depending on the time of year, some types of flowers may not be available. Can you get the flowers you want in the color you want in the season you’ll be getting married?
  • Decorations - Are there wedding decorations available in your chosen colors? Does the color require special ordering or additional expense?
  • Invitations - Generally, invitations can be made in almost any color, but it’s a good idea to check before you make a final decision.
  • Guest gifts - Are you looking for a guest gift that includes your wedding colors? Double check to ensure you can get your favors in the colors you want.

4. Select your venue

The venue you choose says a lot about your style and the story you’re wanting to tell. You’ll want to select a place that has charm, sophistication, and provides a welcoming atmosphere for both you and your guests.

Your venue should also match the overall theme of your wedding. If you’re wanting a cozy, intimate gathering, you won’t want to hold your wedding and reception in a large, echoing space. If you’d like a mix of indoor and outdoor settings, you’ll want to find a location that can accommodate that. Make sure you tour all your potential wedding venues to find which one best fits the style and story of your event.

5. Select your dress

Perhaps something every bride dreams of, selecting your wedding dress is one of the best ways to showcase your personality and style. If you’ve already chosen the time of year and the venue for your wedding, they can help guide you in your dress selection. A black-tie-formal dress might feel out of place at a barn-themed wedding, for example.

You can also select your dress first and build your wedding around it. Did you choose something with long sleeves? Maybe a winter wedding at an indoor venue is appropriate.

6. Don’t feel pressured to act on the opinions of others

It may be your big day, but your friends and family are excited for you and eager to help. Sometimes that means their opinions can come across a little forcefully. While you may be tempted to cave to some of their ideas, it’s important to keep sight of your own vision for your big day.

If the suggestions of family and friends don’t fit with what you have in mind, it’s okay to turn them down. You can be kind and gracious even while saying “no thank you.” Don’t let others dictate how your special day should look. Stick with your plan and don’t look back!
